about

I had been reading Jeff Vandermeer’s 'Southern Reach Trilogy' as this track was developed over the span of a couple of days. A big fan of the movie, a friend had told me to check out the books that inspired Annihilation, and good advice it was! This song is built out of a synth performance on my Roland Juno 106 with a long pronounced portamento on the chord changes. I had a drum recording for a separate, unrealised song, which I decided to compress and distort with SoundToys plugins, before feeding to the MakeNoise Morphagene and seeing what I could do to politely destroy them with various modulation sources - a very rewarding process. This approach toward organic creation paralleled the sort of mysterious amalgamations from the book, imposed by the shimmer on those who breached (or happened to be swallowed by) its borders. While creating the piece I thought about the destroyed drums and the obnoxious portamento and how they, after a while, no longer seemed broken or obtuse; a sonic pallet had been established. This idea of a temporal lens through which we absorb stimuli and our environment is from where the piece borrows its name.
